Denise Scott Earns NJCAA Division II First Team All-American Honors
Denise Scott is a 5’5" freshman guard from Lincoln High School in Yonkers, NY. She is a complete player who fills out the stat sheets game by game as evidenced by her totals in points, rebounds, assists, and steals. Being able to do all of these things as well as being a go to player and a great teammate has earned Scott a spot on the First Team All-American.
Scott came to CCRI a wide eyed freshman looking to ease into the lineup. However, the coaching staff had different plans for her. They wanted to develop Denise into the go to option during the course of the season. While Scott started off slowly, she averaged a consistent 10 points a game. Since January 6, 2007, Scott has averaged 17.5 points per game, 4.8 rebounds per game, and three steals per game during the regular season and has become the number one go to option for Head Coach Marcus Reilly.
Scott appeared in 24 games this season for the Lady Knights and was their leading scorer. Denise has step up numerous times with the game on the line. The bigger the game for Scott the better she plays as evident by her stats. It was also evident by her play in one of the more memorable women’s game to take place at Vincent A. Cullen Field House on January 21, 2007. The defending Division I Champions Monroe Community College out of Rochester, NY come to town and beat the Lady Knights in a 53-50 thriller. Scott scored 19 points, all which seemed to come at key times during the course of the game. She also pulled down nine rebounds, dished out five assists and had two steals. One day after Denise helped the Lady Knights beat Genesee Community College. Scott scored a game high 25 that day, 20 of which came in the second half as the Lady Knights pulled away for a 63-56 victory.
With the Region XXI regular season Championship on the line on February 21, 2007, the Lady Knights beat Dean College 74-57. Once again the Lady Knights were led by Scott who scored a game high 21 points. This win clinched the regular season Region XXI title for the Lady Knights for the fourth straight year. However, Scott did not just lead the team with her offense she also led them on the defense end by pulling down eight rebounds and swiping five steals.
In the Lady Knight two playoff games Scott was simply dominant. In the Region XXI Championship game Scott poured in a game and season high 36 points. 29 of the 36 points came in the second half which helped the Lady Knights to a convincing 27 point victory. In the Northeast district championship and the right to go to the Nationals, Scott had 22 points with seven rebounds, four assists and five steals.
The scoring streak continued once the Lady Knights got to the National Tournament. In the first game of the tournament Denise had her second thirty point game of the postseason versus Edison Community College (Edison, OH) in a 68-65 win. Scott finished the game with 30 points on 13-19 shooting including three 3-pointers. Scott was also coach Reilly’s go to person down the stretch of this close game. Over the last two minutes coach Reilly drew plays up for Denise and she responded with a basket every time for the Lady Knights. Scott also finished the game with three assists and two rebounds.
In the third game of the tournament Scott finished one rebound shy of a double-double. Scott finished the game with 23 points and nine rebounds in a two point loss to the number four ranked team in the country North Central Missouri College. With these two performances Scott earned all tournament honors.
Coach Reilly speaks very highly of Scott saying, "Denise’s ability to take over a game on both ends of the floor throughout out postseason highlighted her remarkable year.
